This new program was created using $3.8 million in federal funds received from the Department of Energy as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
It is designed to promote the use of renewable energy in the public sector by offering grants to cover up to 25 percent of the costs (not to exceed $250,000) of developing, implementing, and installing a renewable energy source:
wind
solar
biomass
geothermal, or
hydropower.
These projects are expected to have long-lasting economic and environmental benefits for local communities.

Grants will be awarded in four separate rounds:
Round 1: Application deadline was January 31, 2010. Awardees selected February 24, 2010, and will be announced, once final approval from DOE is received.
Round 2: Applications may be submitted from March 1 - April 15, 2010. Awardees will be selected by April 30, 2010.
Round 3: Applications may be submitted from May 1 - June 15, 2010. Awardees will be selected by June 30, 2010.
Round 4: Applications in this final round will be accepted from July 1 - 23, 2010, and reviewed and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
