Governor Brownback to Visit Kansas Energy Expo

Hutchinson, KS - Governor Brownback will visit the Kansas Energy Expo at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 11 at the 2014 Kansas State Fair. During the visit he will interact with fairgoers and talk with them individually about the importance of Kansas' energy resources.

"I am pleased to visit the Kansas Energy Expo, an important initiative for the state of Kansas," stated Governor Sam Brownback. "Energy touches virtually every part of our lives and it is important that we have a good understanding of how it is utilized in Kansas."

"The Commission is pleased to host Governor Brownback at the Kansas Energy Expo as we work together to support education, especially science, technology, engineering, and math" stated Chair Shari Feist Albrecht.

The Kansas Corporation Commission is the lead agency that developed and implemented the Kansas Energy Expo supported by 23 stakeholder groups, debuting at the 2014 Kansas State Fair. At the Expo, energy is divided into five sectors: Oil and Gas, Transportation, Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, and Utilities. Within each sector there are various hands-on learning opportunities targeted to children and adults on the value of Kansas' energy resources. Interactive experiences are designed to be fun and engaging. Funding is provided in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Kansas Energy Expo also focuses on jobs available in each of the energy sectors. Fairgoers interested in one of the posted jobs can get information on how to apply at the Expo. Three cell phone charging stations are offered as part of the Expo, one powered by solar, one by bike, and one by a wall outlet. A scavenger hunt is available for kids and adults with various prizes being awarded. A student activity center is available that accommodates up to 25 students, where participants can build and test a wind turbine blade.

Kansas Energy Expo cookies will be served to the public beginning at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 11.
