Rose Flora and Vaughn Flora receive Governor’s Energy Award

Rose Flora and Vaughn Flora received the Governor’s Energy Recognition Award in Energy Leadership at the Kansas Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Conference held in Topeka.

Rose Flora and Vaughn Flora have been leaders in energy efficient housing. They planned and constructed energy efficient apartments in east Topeka for moderate income citizens. Known as the T-Town Homes, the complex exemplifies the modern energy saving features possible using state-of-the-art technology.

Insulated Concrete Forms were used featuring R-20 plus exterior walls. All interior walls feature cellulose insulation for soundproofing and comfort. An insulated slab edge rating of R-10 was obtained.

Blower Door testing indicated below .2 air changes per hour for air conditioning and heating.

The apartments feature R-50 cellulose attic insulation and Low-E, argon filled, double pane windows. Compact fluorescent lighting and Energy Star appliances were used throughout.

Heating and air conditioning are supplied by Ground Source Heat Pumps.

The 1,000 square foot, two bedroom apartment units have been monitored since construction in 2001 and average about $35 per month for the TOTAL energy bill.
